The southwestern slope of Camelback Mountain provides a dramatic backdrop for a 12,000 square foot contemporary home. Its city-facing facade includes a black stone trapezoid that begged for a sculpture.
While providing a dramatic focal point for the house's facade from the street, the piece could not obscure the breathtaking view of downtown Phoenix. Still, the scale needed to make sense, and it had to be able to withstand the wind that whips through the nearby canyon.
After visiting the site, meeting with the homeowners and architect, Kevin designed the graceful yet joyful BackFlip.
Indeed, BackFlip plays with the sun as he rises through the rocks, his profile shifting and becoming increasingly substantial as you pass by the house. From inside, he makes himself known without hogging the view.
