BackFlip
Commission Private Collection Phoenix, Arizona powder-coated steel 87" x 16" x 16" created 2008 The southwestern slope of Camelback Mountain provides a dramatic backdrop for a 12,000 square foot contemporary home. Its city-facing facade includes a black stone trapezoid that begged for a sculpture. While providing a dramatic focal point for the house's facade from the street, the piece could not obscure the breathtaking view of downtown Phoenix. Still, the scale needed to make sense, and it had to be able to withstand the wind that whips through the nearby canyon. After visiting the site, meeting with the homeowners and architect, Kevin designed BackFlip. The sculpture plays with the sun as it rises through the rocks, its profile shifting and becoming increasingly substantial as drivers pass the house. From inside, BackFlip enhances yet doesn't monopolize the view. For more information, please contact us |
