Two March events, Torrent's auction triumph, a wrap-up of the Olney Gallery show, what's happening in the studio, and video vignettes all mark a lively spring....

Here's what's happening:

Let's go ....

"I'm excited to be in this show," Kevin says. His sculpture Charmed sold at the 2011 show, which was sponsored by the same organization, Il Chiostro.

The show reception will be held Saturday, March 24, 4 - 7 p.m. If you're in the New York area, we'd love to see you.

On the homefront, Kevin's sculpture Keep Your Words Short and Sweet in Case You Have to Eat Them is appearing in the juried art show "Phoenix+" at Modified Arts gallery in downtown Phoenix. "It's a pleasure to be part of Phoenix's amazing annual Art Detour event by being in this show," Kevin says.

Modified Arts is located at 407 E. Roosevelt in the heart of Phoenix's arts district.

Art Detour is a free, two-day, self-guided tour of artist galleries, studios, and other art venues in downtown Phoenix organized by Artlink in cooperation with participating venues that draws thousands of enthusiastic arts supporters each year.

"This show should be great fun," Kevin says. The show opening will be held Saturday, March 17, 6 - 9 p.m. If you're in greater Phoenix, please come by and say hi.

See the Events page for more information about this show and the Artlink Web site about Art Detour.

Torrent sale is noted success at Phoenix Art Museum auction

Bidding was heated on February 18 for Kevin's free-standing sculpture Torrent at the Contemporary Forum's art auction at the Phoenix Art Museum. "It was really exciting," Kevin says. "At the end, I couldn't help jumping up out of my seat." Contemporary Forum is a special interest group of the Phoenix Art Museum.

The one-sided, three-dimensional sculpture made of steel with a rust patina - one of a series of geometric illusions Kevin has created - was one of only two items in the auction that sold for more than the top end of its price range. It tied for highest price with a painting valued at almost three times that of Torrent, which was purchased by a renowned collector.

Olney Gallery show proves noted success

The three-person show "Flower, Leaf & Rust," which featured Kevin's sculpture as well as the drawings of Catherine Ruane and the mixed media work of Annie Waters, closed Monday, February 27 after a successful run at the Olney Gallery in downtown Phoenix.

The February 3 and 17 receptions drew about 325 visitors, with many people coming back more than once to see the show. "I was pleased with the comments I heard and the people who attended," Kevin observes. "It was a really beautiful show."

Thanks to everyone who attended.

PROJECTS UNDER WAY IN THE STUDIO
The Seed, a site-specific public art sculpture by Kevin Caron in process
The 'sluice' of The Seed, standing

As he likes to do, Kevin is working on several pieces at a time. "I like to have a variety of works under way because that lets me work on one for a while, then switch to another when I get stuck - or inspired," he says.

The Seed public art commission continues to grow

Kevin's biggest focus right now is the public art commission The Seed, which is being created for Chandler's Tumbleweed Recreation Center.

Kevin recently completed the largest part of the sculpture, the 15-foot-tall "sluice." (To get an idea how tall the sluice is, Kevin is 6'1".) Before completion, the sculpture will be powder-coated, as shown in the rendering on the sculpture's Web page.

Made of aluminum, The Seed will be placed in the multistory lobby of Chandler's $12.6 million Tumbleweed Recreation Center. Kevin is currently working on the final step of construction, creating the "seed" structure that stands in front of the sluice.

Another public artwork also under way

Kevin is also at work on a sculpture that has been accepted for a juried public exhibition at Pima Community College East Campus in Tucson, Arizona. Wherever You Go, There You Are will be a nine-foot-tall sculpture based on his well-received sculpture Torrent (above).

"It took nine months to create Torrent," Kevin observes. "Although this sculpture is nearly twice as big, I will be able to apply what I learned in that project to this one."

Delicious banter inspires sculpture

Kevin also recently completed the free-standing fine art sculpture Keep Your Words Short and Sweet in Case You Have to Eat Them.

Carved by Kevin on his milling machine out of a solid aluminum block, Short and Sweet now has its textured "coat," which contrasts with the high shine of its legs, and its protective coating. "I saw this sculpture clearly in my head before I began working on it," Kevin says. "Creating it was, in essence, my master's thesis on the mill. As far as I know, no one else has ever used a mill to carve a sculpture before."
