APRIL 2014

Bookmark and Share

April begins with a "giant" commission, an intriguing printed sculpture, and a trip to Japan. Kevin was stationed in Japan during his Navy days and feels very at home there. It will be fun for him to return. In Phoenix, he's enjoying creating during the last days of a beautiful spring  ...

GIANT STREET URCHIN COMMISSIONED FOR FLORIDA DEVELOPMENT

Street Urchin, a contemporary art sculpture by Kevin CaronAllied Capital & Development of South Florida of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has commissioned a 5-foot version of Kevin's street urchin for its $144 million Harbourside Place commercial complex in Jupiter, Florida.

"It will be interesting to achieve the same lively spirit in this larger form," says Kevin. Other street urchins have ranged in size from less than 2" to 14", and their finishes have ranged from powder coating to stainless steel.

Kevin is already working on the piece and considering fabrication options. Watch this sculpture develop on its own page.

ONE MORE DAY FOR NEW YORK SHOW;
NEW KINETIC SCULPTURE SHOW AT VISION GALLERY

The show "Luce" ends its run tomorrow, April 2, in New York City. Kevin's midsized sculpture Midnight Sun was one of 80 pieces selected from 320 submitted for this juried show.

The show is being held at the site/109 Gallery, 109 Norfolk St. in New York's uptrending Lower East Side. The gallery is on the ground floor level with great exposure onto a busy street. The artist reception was held Saturday, March 29.Shade West Gallery by monOrchid Gallery, Renaissance Hotel, Phoenix AZ

Closer to home, many of the sculptures in the recent show "Elevation" are now being shown at Shade West (right), a gallery inside the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel that is curated by the wonderful team from monOrchid. "The pieces transferred beautifully to this space," observes Kevin. "Apparently they are getting a lot of attention, too, especially from out-of-town visitors." The Renaissance is at 50 E. Adams in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The art will be on display through the end of April.

In Chandler, Kevin's sculpture Tesseraction has just been selected for the show "Unpredictable Change: Kinetic Sculpture" at Vision Gallery in Chandler, Arizona. "This is a beautiful space with wonderful lighting and a fantastic staff," says Kevin, whose work is regularly carried at the gallery.

The show will be held Friday, May 16 through Saturday, July 5. Vision Gallery is owned and operated by the city of Chandler. Learn more about the gallery on its own site.

IN THE PRESS: PHOENIX HOME & GARDEN VIDEO, WESTERMAN'S

For the Birds video, Sam Campana, Phoenix Home & GardenIn a delightful surprise, Kevin's work can be seen in a video about the garden of former Scottsdale mayor Sam Campana. "Sam has several of my bugs and an ocotillo," says Kevin. "Her yard is full of the artwork of local artists, so I was especially excited that you could see some of my work in this beautifully shot video." The video, "For the Birds," is a production of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine, which is itself a tribute to Southwestern living. Click here to enjoy "For the Birds."

An interview with Kevin was also featured on a British welding supply site called Westerman's. "It's always fun to let others know what I am doing with welding," says Kevin. Enjoy the interview here.

UNDER WAY IN THE STUDIO

Cohesive Curves, which has been garnering many great comments, now has its official photo on its own page. "As big as this bell is, the lightest breeze makes it ring sweetly," Kevin says. See and hear it for yourself on Cohesive Curves' own page.

Beginnings of Giant Street Urchin, a contemporary art sculpture by Kevin CaronOn Kevin's front burner these days is the Giant Street Urchin. See the hemisphere that will anchor it on the sculpture's own page (partial view, right). An upcoming video will explain the Martian markings on the hemisphere ....

Kevin also continues to work on a 5-foot-tall aluminum sculpture titled Building Blocks. "I'd love to make a monumental version of this sculpture," he says. Kevin still has some finish work to do on this piece, but you can see it in its current state on its own page.

On a back burner is a sculptural spike piece. "I like to work on this piece intermittently," Kevin says. "Shaping it is a wonderful, intuitive exercise ...."

Holy Cannoli, a contemporary art sculpture by Kevin CaronOn the technological front, Holy Cannoli (left) is Kevin's first attempt at a 3-D printed sculpture. "This is another single-sided, three-dimensional form, one I designed myself in my CAD program," explains Kevin. "The translucent plastic is amazing. There are still many questions how this technology translates to art, and I'm enjoying the conversation."

You can always see what Kevin is working on in Works in Progress on the Web site - it's updated often.
