Why Is my TIG Tungsten Tip Blue? (and What to Do About It)

Have you ever been TIG welding and noticed that your tungsten has turned a pretty shade of blue?

Why does this happen?

Kevin explains that his TIG tungsten turned blue because he had it stuck out a little too far. He was trying to weld in a tight corner, so he stuck out the tungsten a little more than usual.

Because the tip was stuck out a little farther, oxygen was getting to it because he hadn't turned up the gas flow on the flowmeter to protect it.

So if you're going to stick your tungsten out a little more than usual, turn up your gas flow 1/8 or 1/4 turn, just to compensate for your tungsten sticking out a little more by increasing the gas coverage on the tip.

Now Kevin gets to take the "walk of shame" to the grinder to resharpen the tungsten.
