Welding and Grinding - 09-23-09 Welding and Grinding - 09-23-09
With the skin now on the stand for BobbyPin, Kevin's new bell, it's time for the tedious part: touching up the welds, grinding, welding some more, grinding .... Kevin also talks about the finish he's considering: rust and Penetrol for a harder, shinier look.

sculpture, welding, welds, grinding, finish, rust, Penetrol, steel sculpture, bell, gong, sculptor, Kevin Caron
Fixing A Wrinkle - 09-17-09 Fixing A Wrinkle - 09-17-09
The stand for the bell BobbyPin developed a little wrinkle when Kevin was convincing the two sides to twist, turn and swoop into place. That's nothing that a little heat from an oxygen-acetylene welding torch with a rosebud tip, a flattening hammer, a crowbar and a blacksmith's dolly won't fix!
Fitting Pieces to Create a Seamless Look - 09-04-09 Fitting Pieces to Create a Seamless Look - 09-04-09
To create solid bases - yes, two of them - for his new bell stand, Kevin cuts and fits pieces using the slip roll, hammer, shear and plasma cutter, then welds the pieces into place between the structural supports. Making the base solid gives the stand for this bell, whose working title is BobbyPin, greater rigidity and strength.

"I'm melting!" OK, maybe it's not melting, but Kevin is reducing the metal tree public commission for the city of Avondale, Arizona, to a trunk and a tangle of branches so he can transport it to Avondale's Sernas Plaza for installation - without hitting overpasses or taking up more than one lane of traffic. Along the way, he shares secrets of controlling the bends ... and tries not to hit you in the head with the branches.
Combining Metal Tubes and Balls for a Sculpture - 04-09-09 Combining Metal Tubes and Balls for a Sculpture - 04-09-09
For his latest piece, Kevin is creating "strings" of steel tubing and steel balls. While it sounds simple, that involves cutting the tubes to an exact length, cleaning them and prepping the balls so they don't explode (even though that might be fun to see). See what Kevin does to create what looks like a simple series of tubes and balls - then check out what the piece looks like now in In the Works.
TIG Welding Technique - 04-02-09 TIG Welding Technique - 04-02-09
