Arc Welding (SMAW)
Arc welding - also known as "stick welding" or, officially, Shielded Metal Arc Welding - has some advantages over other types - notably the ability to weld outdoors in inclement weather and low cost.
Arc welding creates an electric arc between an electrode and whatever you are welding to melt together the metals. An arc welder can use direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current, and consumable or non-consumable electrodes, as well as shielding gas and sometimes an evaporating filler material.
Arc welders can be separate units - like that shown at right - or part of a TIG/arc combination.
