Cutting and Grinding

larger angle grinderDepending upon the shape and size of the metal he is cutting for a sculpture in progress, Kevin uses a variety of tools in his studio, including a plasma cutter, Beverly shear, jump shear, plate shear, chop saw, nibbler and air cut-off tool.

For grinding, he may use a larger and a medium sized angle grinder, air angle grinder, die grinder and pencil grinder.

Kevin continues his series on how to create a sculpture - at least how he creates a sculpture (although you can jump in at any time). In this episode, he is using his Makita 7" grinder to notch the 1/8-inch steel plate triangles that are part of the sculpture's inner structure. In the third part of a series on how he is creating a sculpture, Kevin explains how to fabricate repeatable pieces by creating a jig using his cutting table, scrap metal, pivot pins (center punches) and a sweeper arm to make the inner, triangle shaped supports on the sculpture Wherever You Go, There You Are. He shows how to build the jig, then "makes some sparks," cutting out a support with his plasma cutter.

To give a stainless steel sculpture a more stable yet still elegant base, Kevin cuts small "donuts," or disks, out of 1/4" stainless steel. He shows how he uses a simple trick to keep from disfiguring the steel while cutting it.
