How to Tap a Hole in Metal Using a Mill How to Tap a Hole in Metal Using a Mill
May 09, 2012
Kevin decides to use his mill to tap a hole in an aluminum plate that he will weld to the top of his 15-foot-tall public art sculpture The Seed for the city of Chandler, Arizona. The ring will allow the sculpture to be lifted into place with a lifting ring, which will then be removed from the top of the sculpture after installation. You are an eyewitness to his first try at tapping using the mill, instead of his drill press, which he usually uses. Watch as he drills into the plate, lowers the tap, and then backs it out. Last of all, he checks the fit of the lifting ring.
